Panneerselvam was born on 14 January 1951 in Periyakulam, Tamil Nadu. He was born to Ottakara Devar and Palaniammal Nachiyar. Panneerselvam
obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Haji Karutha Rowther Howdia College in Uthamapalayam, Theni district. He also owned some agricultural land. He is married to P. Vijayalakshmi and the couple have three children. He is currently elected from the constituency of Bodinayakkanur, in Theni district. His wife died on 1 September 2021 due to a heart attack and his mother died at the age of 96 on 24 February 2023. Panneerselvam was involved in the finance business along with his father. Then he ran his own dairy farm and a tea shop with his friends.
POLITICAL JOURNEY:
Panneerselvam joined the ADMK after MGR started the party. In the year 1982, he was given the post of Periyakulam City MGR Youth Deputy Secretary in the party.
In 1993, Panneerselvam was given the post of Periyakulam Nagar Kazhagam Secretary. In 1996, he contested and won as the Municipal President of Periyakulam. In 2000, Panneerselvam Theni assumed the post of District Secretary.
In the 2001 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Panneerselvam contested from Periyakulam constituency and became a member of the Legislative Assembly for the first time.
Jayalalithaa was Chief Minister in 2001, was stripped of her post as Chief Minister by the Supreme Court in the Dancy case. Panneerselvam was then elected as the Chief Minister and served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 21 September 2001 to 1 March 2002.
Panneerselvam contested again in the 2006 assembly election from Periyakulam constituency and won.
In the 2011 assembly election, he contested from Bodhinayakanur constituency and was elected as a member of the assembly for the third consecutive term. This time, Panneerselvam was given the post of Finance Minister and the responsibility of the former.
Panneerselvam became Chief Minister for the second time when Jayalalithaa went to jail again in the asset hoarding case. Served as Chief Minister from 29 Sep 2014 to 22 May 2015.
O. Panneerselvam was elected as the Chief Minister for the third time on 6th December 2016 due to the death of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on 5th December 2016.
On 21 August 2017 Panneerselvam team and Edappadi Palanichamy team merged. O. Panneerselvam was given the post of coordinator of ADMK and Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Edappadi Palaniswami and Panneerselvam clashed over ADMK takeover. O. Panneerselvam and others were removed from the ADMK in the 2022 ADMK Executive Committee meeting chaired by Edappadi Palanichami. Currently ADMK is divided into one team led by Panneerselvam and one team led by Edappadi Palaniswami.
